This book provides an extended introduction to the scripture translations of Biraban, an Awabakal man, and the missionary Lancelot Threlkeld. It examines Threlkeld’s linguistic field work in Raiatea prior to coming to New South Wales. It places the translations he undertook in the context of Australian missionary linguistics and the rapid advance of the settler frontier, for which he was a key eyewitness. It analyses the motivation and collaboration between Biraban and Threlkeld in the light of discoveries of new manuscripts, including that of the Gospel of St Matthew, as well as Threlkeld’s personal diary, neither of which have previously been analysed. The review includes a linguistic and ethnographic analysis of the complete corpus of Biraban and Threlkeld’s collaboration. It includes a complete list of the Threlkeld manuscripts and the many printed editions, including those available online. For historical purposes, it includes a copy of the unique standalone edition of the Gospel of Saint Luke, presented by the editor, James Fraser, to the British and Foreign Bible Society. The original is now in Cambridge University Library. It also includes a full digitisation of Threlkeld’s autograph manuscript, illuminated by Annie Layard, in Auckland City Library.

En 1897, l’Essai de sémantique de Michel Bréal rendait à l’école française de linguistique une question du sens longtemps abandonnée aux lexicographes. Quatre-vingts ans plus tôt, en 1816, Franz Bopp avait fondé la philologie moderne en rupture avec la perspective philosophique des Lumières. Dix ans plus tard, en 1906, Meillet publiera un « Comment les mots changent de sens » attaquant la question sous l’angle de la sociologie, sociologie que la psychologie et l’anthropologie entreprenaient de supplanter.
Bopp avait fondé la grammaire comparée des langues indo-européennes sur l’analyse des morphèmes flexionnels et dérivationnels des noms et des verbes ; Grimm avait remis en question la ligne de partage entre phonétique et morphologie au bénéfice de la première, annonçant l’arrivée de la phonétique expérimentale ; Pott s’était interrogé sur les racines et les étymologies des langues d’Europe, ce qui mènera à la « paléontologie linguistique » de Pictet puis à la « mythologie comparée » de Müller. Autant de jalons qui permettent de mesurer à quel point Michel Bréal s’est écarté des interprétations ethniques et raciales – indo-germanistes, aryanistes – des rapports entre la pensée, le monde et la langue. Son Essai de sémantique ne saurait se comprendre sans rappeler que l’auteur était, comme Alfred Dreyfus, un Alsacien d’origine israélite, comme on disait à l’époque.

The present book is the English translation of Louis Hjelmslev’s lectures on glossematics, the theory of language developed in the forties by him and Hans Jørgen Uldall, and taught at the University of Copenhagen in 1942-43, thoroughly taken down in shorthand by his student Harry Wett Frederiksen. The document, unpublished so far, is one-of-a-kind in its pedagogical dimension, as it aims to introduce students, and now readers, to the glossematician’s workshop, informally discussing its theoretical framework, the operations employed in description and the reasons why such operations were devised via a concrete analysis of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy-tale “The Sweethearts”. Overall, the document offers a unique glimpse into the machinery of one of the most epistemologically aware and rigorous theories of language developed in the 20th century.

This volume comprises two invited talks and fifteen selected papers, chosen from over 200 submissions to the 15th International Conference on the History of Language Sciences (ICHoLS XV). Originally scheduled to be held in Milan in 2020, the conference was postponed and moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Held from August 23-27, 2021, it connected scholars from 30 countries across various time zones.
The volume is divided into three parts. The first part, devoted to General and Particular Issues in the History of Linguistics, recalls classical authors in relation to contemporary ones as well as newly established disciplines and subtle epistemological inquiries. The second part, Antiquity, mainly investigates the Sanskrit language and various descriptive and didactic studies, approached from both ancient and contemporary metalinguistic frameworks. The third part deals with Sixteenth to Twentieth Century Works, ranging from the Tamil language to American archives, and from experimental phonostylistics to the history of monosemy.
